Whether you're returning from winter break or starting your first spring semester, January brings a unique opportunity for a fresh start.

The Post-Break Transition

Coming back to campus after being home can stir up mixed feelings. You might feel:

  • Relieved to return to independence and your college routine

  • Anxious about upcoming coursework and responsibilities

  • Sad about leaving family or missing the comfort of home

  • Motivated and energized by the new semester

  • All of the above at different moments

All of these feelings are normal. Give yourself some time to readjust.

Setting Intentions (Not Just Goals)

Instead of ambitious New Year's resolutions that create pressure, consider setting intentions for how you want to feel and show up this semester:

  • "I want to prioritize my sleep more consistently."

  • "I want to reach out for help when I need it instead of struggling alone."

  • "I want to make time for activities that help me recharge."

Intentions focus on values and self-care, not just productivity.

Mental Health Check-In

Take a moment to assess where you are:

  • How did you feel last semester? What worked? What didn't?

  • What warning signs did you notice when stress got high?

  • What support do you need this semester that you didn't have last semester?

If you struggled with your mental health last semester, now is the time to put support systems in place before things get hard again.

Resources to Set Up Early

  • Schedule a counseling intake appointment if you haven't already (wait times can be long)

  • Connect with your academic advisor about course load concerns

  • Reach out to disability services if you need accommodations

  • Find out about campus support groups or wellness programs

One Thing to Try This Month

Establish one small self-care routine that you can maintain even during busy weeks. This might be:

  • A 10-minute morning routine before checking your phone

  • A midweek check-in with a friend

  • One meal per day eaten mindfully without screens

  • A Sunday evening planning session to reduce week-ahead anxiety

Start small. Consistency matters more than perfection.
